I wanted to record my voice over journey, but had been looking for another "Journal". I don't know why when I had one here the whole time. So, this is my choice.
It's only been a couple of weeks, but when you know in your heart that this is the role for you, it's overwhelming. I've always been a huge fan of cartoons, imitating voices and such. When my daughter was little I'd read to her every night and I would create the voices for each character. It was natural. She enjoyed it and I enjoyed doing it. I love to read aloud and I can speak in different accents, just for the fun of it. I never thought that me, being myself, could turn into a career I would love.
I'm 43 and for the first time in my life, I know what I want to do and I'm now on that path of discovering everything there is to know about the voice over world.
I downloaded a book to my kindle by Bill DeWees "How to start and build a 6 figure voice over business". Now, this was my first purchased into the journey, but it wasn't because it said "build a 6 figure business". I don't care how much money I make. I just know this will be the job that I will enjoy until I die. Bill gives very good advice for beginners and I'm still reading the book and marking the most important items for me, at this moment.
On January 7th, I saw a tweet from James Patrick Stuart regarding the documentary "I know that voice", which was created by John DiMaggio. It's an inside look of the voice over world; speaking to many famous voice over actors/actresses. It's just another step in learning what I need to know. I've currently watched it 3 times now and will probably watch it again. Each time I watch it, I catch something I didn't before.
I accidentally came across a few people on twitter that are voice over actors and I've added them to a 'list', just for information purposes. One of these ladies stood out. She had her own website, she lives in Boston and she had clips of her demos that I listened to. I asked her if I could contact her through her website email. She told me that that email had a glitch and she gave me her yahoo email.
I wrote her Friday night and gave her a little information about myself and how I've come to realize this is what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I then asked her a couple of questions...how to actually get my foot in the door. Everything I read is related to being there already, but since I'm brand new and have no experience, I need to know what the most important thing to do first.
She said with not knowing, that I need to take a voice over class. I need to see the equipment used for demo's and have a hands on experience. I need to learn the terminology of the job and I will need a professionally recorded demo.
Bringing this journal up to speed...this is where I am this morning. I'm searching for voice over classes, but I promise that I won't find any close to where I live. I live in Sylvester, GA...aka Mayberry.
